Many independent musicians get categorized as “starving artists,” but with the financial hardship before making the big break, comes for many a lack of healthcare.
John Wiley was only 13-years-old when his grandma took her old guitar out from under her bed and taught him how to play Amazing Grace. John Wiley promised to never put down the guitar again, until March 15, 2009, when the Brooklyn musician awoke without any feeling in the left side of his body. John was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system.
Enduring countless examinations, therapy, tests and hospital stays took its toll on John. Although his physical situation began to improve, his financial situation worsened.

As the weeks speed by, taking the days of summer with them, many members of FNCU are ending their summer internships with a bang.
That is why this week’s Intern of the Week is promotions intern Laura Britt. A senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), she majors in mass communications broadcasting with minors in communication management and Spanish.
The ambitious intern is spending her summer in the promotions department where she is getting opportunities to do things that she never thought she would. Britt explained that everyone always told her “you will get more experience working at a local station because you will get to do more.” Since interning at FNC, that theory has been “shot to the ground” because she had tons of hands-on experiences at FNC.
“Just the knowledge and the experiences that you take away from interning at FOX is priceless,” she explained.
In fact, Britt got the chance to appear in a sweepstakes commercial for the Fox Business Network. She also hosted an hour of the Strategy Room’s Intern Panel, an experience that was “extremely nerve racking,” but something that she could “never pass up because it will last a lifetime.”
It is her can-do attitude that is allowing her to take her FNCU internship by storm. Britt explained that she is “taking every opportunity” that’s thrown her way in the promotions department and “running with it.”
On her down time, you can find Britt running along her favorite New York spot, the Hudson River. She has also been exploring the city with friends from home who have come out for visits.
This fall at UAB, Britt will jump right in with the many activities that she participates in. She is a sister in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, as well as the vice president of the Society of Professional Journalists and co-founder of UAB’s Blazer TV. If that isn’t already enough, she is also a cheerleader.
“I am just really involved with UAB,” said Britt. “I love our school, love football games, basketball games, everything.”
Britt will graduate this December. She explained that working in the promotions has opened her eyes to other jobs in the news industry.
“I have always wanted to do reporting and anchoring,” she said. “Now from working with promotions I realize I can still be involved in the news but not necessarily behind the desk.
Fox Report and Studio B intern Bryan Llenas gets a chance to do a 30 second news update before the show. It didn’t air but he says it was quite the “adrenaline rush.”
So what’s the Deal with the Lawn Chairs?

In the city that never sleeps, it’s hard to ignore hundreds of pedestrians putting their feet up in the middle of Times Square; over 300 people to be exact.
Tom Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance is the man responsible for the traffic stopping lawn chairs.
“They have been great for the point of view that people get to sit in Times Square and watch the world go by,” says Tom Tompkins. Tompkins says the lawn chairs are a good investment and the city is getting its money worth.
“They are fulfilling their role as temporary…they are not intended for heavy use,” he says, “They are a fun, cheap temporary solution.” Tompkins says that although some of the lawn chairs are breaking, majority are still holding up, and hopefully they will last to the end of next month –That’s when city is projecting to cut the ribbon on the new pedestrian plazas.

It's that time again.
This week's FNCU Intern of the Week is Dave Herd. A senior broadcast journalism major from Utah's Brigham Young University (BYU), Herd works as an intern for "America's Newsroom."
After contributing two stories to the FNCU Web site, Herd is being recognized for his efforts. His first story was a TV news package about the New York City street performers in Central Park, and his second was a radio broadcast dealing with shopping deals in China Town.
Although Herd says he has a passion for journalism, he has a strong enthusiasm for making people laugh.
"I just like having fun, because life is all about having fun," said Herd. "That is my philosophy."
According to Herd, the best part about interning for FNC, is the interaction he gets to have with so many different people who are "goal driven" and "dedicated."
Herd also explained how, by interning at FNC, his perception of news changed.
"My news judgment has enhanced dramatically. My first couple weeks [at FNC] I was pitching stories and they were like, 'Yeah right Utah,'" he explained. "Now I pitch stories and most of them are on air once I pitch them. My selection of news stories has definitely gotten a lot better."
One thing that surprised Herd about FNC is the experience that he's getting from interning and the responsibilities that are given to the network's interns.
"This is a national network and you would think that the interns would mostly watch and not do a lot. Since we are actually getting hands-on experience, it is really good," said Herd.
When he isn't pitching story ideas, you can find Herd on the mountains.
"I love to rock climb. Back in Utah, we're known for mountains. I do a lot of extracurricular sports," he said.
In his spare time Herd also enjoys singing and what he calls, "going on crazy, crazy, crazy dates." One date, in particular, included a pre-prom dinner that Herd set up along a main highway.
In between dates, Herd is a reporter, anchor, and producer for a radio station at BYU and a live newscast through PBS.
This self-described "easterner at heart," is having a great time while interning at FNC and living in New York City.
"In Utah it's so relaxed... In New York, its like if you get in people's way you're their worst enemy," he explained.
